Update on The Book Lovers Book Club meet

The Book Lovers Club met on Sunday 22^nd May at Prithvi Café. The discussion was based on the book of the month Devdutt Pattanaik’s The Pregnant King. It is amazing how mythology can have so many perspectives and give a reader so many points of discussion. The book in itself is a very good read. Highly recommended by all the book club members!

This year being Rabindranath Tagore’s 150^th birth anniversary, Kiran suggested that we read and discuss his works on the blog as well as at the book club meet, which we all agreed upon whole heartedly. So besides putting up reviews on the blog we would actively encourage our readers to contribute reviews /discussions/ thoughts about him and his writings. So, come forward, share your posts on our blog!

For the book club meet you can pick your choice of his writing and also do let us know which book you would be reading. The more different titles we read, more enriching the discussion would be when we meet.

Book Lovers Book Club Meet with Sathya Saran

Hey sorry in delaying this post by a week. But here are the details and pictures of our Book Lovers Book Club meet with Sathya Saran. First off, very big thanks, to Sathya for coming and reading from her fabulous book on Guru Dutt, ’10 years with Guru Dutt: Abrar Alvi’s Journey’. The book reading was accompanied by film clips which made the event truly magical and beautiful.

 It was an honour to have you amongst us, Sathya, and here’s wishing you all the very best for all your upcoming titles.

The meeting this time had fewer numbers. Many regular members were missing in action. Hoping that for the next meet we will see higher numbers and also the new members who sent in a request to join the group will attend too.

The members who were present discussed Steig Larsson’s ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ and the unanimous view was that Lisbeth Salander was one of the most interesting and memorable characters of the book. Rohini had managed to finish the entire trilogy before the meet and her opinion was that Steig Larsson’s 2^nd and 3^rd books only get better. A pity he didn’t live to see his success and the sensation his books have managed to create worldwide. So the books should be on everyone’s must read list!

Our next meet is scheduled for 14^th November at the same time 2.30 pm. We will post venue details shortly. The book of the month is Audrey Niffenegger’s ‘The Time Traveller’s Wife’.

A very big thank you to Crossword and their staff  for managing to ensure the meet went off well and looking after all our requirements.

The Book Lovers Book Club Meet

The third Book Lovers Club meeting was held at Crossword, Linking Road on Sunday,5^th September. This was our first meet at the store and I would like to thank the Crossword staff and Tanaz for their whole hearted support and co-operation to ensure the meet went off smoothly. The Calcutta Chromosome by Amitav Ghosh was discussed, debated and reviewed since it was our pick as the book of the month. After reading Indian authors back to back it was decided to pick an international writer and since most of the members have not yet read Stieg Larsson’s trilogy we decided to start with his first book The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo as the book of the month!

Parul Sharma joined us to read from her yet to be released book ‘By the Water Cooler’ which will be out in the market soon. If the first chapter, which she read for the members, is anything to go by this is one book which will turn out to be a good read!

Parul also sportingly answered a lot of questions about her new book and her first book ‘Bringing up Vasu: The First Year’.

The Book Lovers Club Meet

The Book Lovers Club had a very successful second meeting on 1^st August at Prithvi Café. It was heartening to see more book lovers join us. I would like to extend a warm welcome to Darshini, Renu, Priyanka (the third Priyanka in the group now!!) and Atul. We had Mayank Dhingra, Co-Founder of Dial-A-Book from Delhi join us too...Thank you Mayank for attending the meet!

We discussed, debated the book of the month ‘The Palace of Illusions’ by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni while sipping on some masala tea and coffee! Lots of opinions, lots of plot discussions, and lots of talk on the Mahabharat ensued before moving on to choosing the next book to read. The next book we have selected for reading is Amitav Ghosh’s ‘The Calcutta Chromosome’.  The next meet is scheduled for the 5^th of September. The venue details shall be shared soon.

Gouri Dange joined us with her friends to read a few excerpts from her recently launched book ‘The Counsel of Strangers’. She also sportingly answered all questions put forward to her.  The questions ranged from the theme of the book, the choice of characters for the six different stories, her favourite authors, how Indian writing has evolved in the last few years.

Update on The Book Lovers Club

The Book Lovers Club had a very interesting 1st meet where we discussed a slew of books, each one brought along one book to speak
about, and the authors discussed ranged from Picault, to Manto to
Coetze, amongst others.

A lot of discussion happened on which book should be the one for July,
and we finally decided on Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni's The Palace of
Illusions because it is an interesting take of mythology narrated from
Draupadi's perspective.So this is the book we will read and discuss in the next meet.

Also, if anyone would like to send in reviews of any book they have
enjoyed recently, please do mail it in to us, will post on the blog.

So moving on we are now meeting on 1st August ,at Prithvi Cafe and will be joined by Gauri Dange,author of 3 Zakia Mansion who will read a few excerpts from her upcoming book 'The Counsel Of Strangers'

Calling all Mumbai book lovers...

Thanks everyone for expressing an interesting in starting this book


club. The idea for this came up as an offshoot of the book blog

Priyanka and I do, called www.bookloversreview.blogspot.com. While we

did write about books we enjoyed reading, we felt it would be terrific

if we had a group of likeminded souls to get together to conduct

offline discussions on interesting books, and do a book of the month

read, where we all could read a single book for the month, and get

together to discuss the book, to get varying perspectives on the book.

We also want to invite authors to read, discuss their work with us.

Living in the suburbs, getting into town for events becomes difficult,

therefore we were looking at building a suburb based group.

Please do forward the group link to any of your friends who might be

interested in joining up, and lets brainstorm for a book for July. Any

suggestions?
